Detail
Deciding priorities, determining how to communicate them and who is responsible are questions that managers face daily. You’ll hear successful strategies used by progressive industry members to focus their energies, assign priorities, communicate with their staff and get things done, without adding them to the boss’ “to do” list. Each segment is 3 minutes. These are short sessions with impactful lessons. These are critical to review before you leave for any industry gathering such as the OFA Short Course.

What do you do at a trade show? What do you buy and how do you get the most from your decision? Bill McCurry follows Lisa and Nathan Campbell from Danville Gardens (Danville, IL) around the OFA Short Course trade show as they solve a problem with an “impulse” purchase, including who will be responsible for implementing the changes the purchase will bring.

Meet The Cast

Bill McCurry

Bill McCurry grew up in a family business in the photo industry. In 1990 Bill sold the California photo operation that had 225 employees in 17 locations. He has had his own business radio talk show, written four books, taught undergraduate and graduate business courses, spoken at leading industry events around world, and writes for Green Profit magazine. Bill has been actively involved with OFA and the Short Course since 1997. Bill always listens to growers and garden centers sharing their winning strategies with his audience.

Lisa Campbell

Lisa Campbell is the “retail partner” of Danville Gardens with her husband, Nathan. Lisa earned her BA in biology from Indiana University. She has taken ideas from industry gatherings to make their garden center a local landmark. Their annual “Girls’ Night Out” is restricted to 300 women who purchase the $10 ticket. Danville Gardens’ location makes them a true “destination” garden center. Lisa is active in many industry events as a speaker and participant. She was recently elected to the OFA Board of Directors.

Nathan Campbell

Nathan Campbell grew up in the greenhouse business. Danville Gardens was founded in 1939 in Danville, Illinois. Nathan and wife Lisa are the third owners of Danville Gardens. His horticulture degree is from DuPage Horticulture School. He is the “grower partner” supervising production for their retail store as well as select wholesale accounts. In 2009 they changed to a seasonal schedule, eliminating poinsettia growing, so they could invest more time with their children. Nathan is an active participant in industry gatherings and is always willing to help his colleagues.
